What actually happens when you scan

The phrasing does not encode a risk level: "may contain" and "made in a facility with" are not a graded scale, whatever they sound like.

A certified gluten-free mark is a stronger signal than the absence of a warning. Certification involves testing against the 20 ppm threshold; silence involves nothing.

Where barcode scanning genuinely fails

Being straightforward about this is more useful than overselling. A barcode scanner cannot help you with: unpackaged food, restaurant meals, bakery items, deli counters, products not in the database, or anything where the risk is in the kitchen rather than the recipe. Shared fryers and shared toasters are invisible to every scanner ever built.
