Which Gluten Scanner App Should You Use?

Four apps, four different approaches. Every claim about another app here is quoted from that company's own website and linked — including the parts where we lose.

We make one of these apps, so treat this page accordingly. What we can do is be straight about it: every claim below about another app is taken from that company's own website and linked to the source, and the section on where GlutenScanning loses is not decoration.

These tools are not really competing on the same axis. One scans barcodes, one reads label photos with AI, one is built around restaurants. The useful question is which shape fits how you actually shop and eat.

Gluten Free Scanner

The volume player for barcode scanning. Its site claims "3 Million+ Products" in a database "Updated daily by our community", "Trusted by over 1 million people", a "4.8 App Store Rating" from "2,300+ reviews", and "25M+ Scans Completed". It states results "in under a second" and support for "English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish". Free core app, with premium covering "no adverts, scan history, and offline mode".

Pick it if you want the widest barcode coverage and you are on Android, where we have nothing to offer you. The honest trade is that scan history and offline mode sit behind its subscription, and it is gluten-focused rather than multi-allergen. Source: glutenfreescanner.app

The Gluten Free Scanner

The one built for eating out. Its site claims "#1 Gluten Free app on the USA App Store", "1,000,000+ products in our US database and growing", and "150,000 restaurants across the U.S. with advanced menu analysis so you can estimate gluten risk dish by dish". It has run since 2013, reports a "4.7/5" rating, and states it is "100% Independent. Always", having "never monetized through brand deals, affiliate links, or ads". It also offers "dining cards and travel cards" for restaurants at home and abroad.

Pick it if restaurants are your hard problem rather than groceries, and you are in the US — its database and restaurant coverage are explicitly US-focused, which limits it if you travel or live elsewhere. Pricing is not stated on the site. Source: scanglutenfree.com

Check Gluten

The one that does not use barcodes at all. Its site describes scanning "any label for hidden gluten" by reading "raw, real-time ingredient text" from photos or pasted text, covering "500+ tracked triggers" and "30+ chemical names", and working on "packaged food labels, restaurant menus, and labels in many languages". It lists a "Cross-contamination risk score", a "Personal Safe Product List" and "Scan history & exportable reports", and claims to be "Trusted by 10,000+ celiacs worldwide". Premium is "$4.99/month" billed annually at "$59.88/year", or "$12.99/month" monthly, with a "14-day free trial" and a "30-Day Money-Back Guarantee".

Pick it if you mostly need to read labels that are not in any database — imported goods, regional brands, restaurant menus. Reading the label directly sidesteps the stale-database problem entirely. The trade-offs are cost, and that photographing a label is slower than scanning a barcode when you are working through a full shop. Source: checkgluten.com

GlutenScanning, including where it loses

Ours combines barcode scanning with AI meal photo analysis, checks 60+ allergens and dietary restrictions rather than gluten alone, ships in 35+ languages, requires no account, keeps health data on the device, and includes a library of 110+ peer-reviewed research articles. Barcode scanning works offline. Barcode data comes from OpenFoodFacts; meal photo analysis uses the OpenAI Vision API.

Where it loses. It is iOS only — if you are on Android, two of the apps above are your options and we are not. We publish no product count, because our barcode data comes from OpenFoodFacts and coverage varies by region rather than being a number we can honestly claim. We have no restaurant database, so for dining out The Gluten Free Scanner is better equipped in the US. And we are newer, with a correspondingly smaller review history than an app running since 2013.

Pick it if you are managing more than gluten — multiple allergens or a household with different restrictions — you want the research behind the guidance, or you need the app in a language outside the usual handful.

How to choose without overthinking it

Android narrows the field to two immediately. If restaurants are the hard part, that points one way; if it is imported or obscure packaging, another; if it is a weekly shop with several allergens in play, another again. These apps are cheap or free, and most people serious about this end up with two — a fast barcode scanner for the shop and a label reader for the awkward cases.

Whichever you pick, the same caveat applies to all of them: they read labels and databases, not food. None can see a shared fryer. For life-threatening allergies, confirm with the manufacturer.
